With all due respect, a counterpoint

We all know I love me some J-Hud. Like furreal. (Furreal, player? Furreal). Love her. I seriously want her to sing at my funeral. And if she can't make it, then can someone just push play and we all just sit and listen to "Jesus Promised Me a Home Over There?" OK, so we have that established. Now, let's get to the point. Or, the counterpoint, really.

Fantasia owns "I'm Here." The first time I heard her sing it on Idol, I cried. When I saw her perform it on the Tonys, more tears and chills from head to toe. And when I was fortunate enough to see her perform it in person on Broadway, I completely lost it. I was a Weepy Wilma in my seat. I couldn't stop the tears. I think my entire row knew I was a sobby mess because I was crying so hard my chair shook all the seats. The woman has a gift and this song is perfect for her. I love J-Hud and always will. She did well with it, but she can't beat Fantasia's for me. She just can't. She even does it better on her album. She just knows the right touches for the song. It's more than the song for her. She knows Celie and she knows the song. There is a time to be delicate and a time to be strong. J-Hud oversings it in my opinion. Fantasia does it perfectly.

So here we go. Here's the winner, Nation.

Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown...on Broadway

Media_httpwwwadvocate_jmvob

There will even more unbalanced actresses on Broadway this fall, as a date has been confirmed for the opening of the stage musical version of gay director Pedro Almodóvar’s cult film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

The musical is based on the popular 1988 Spanish comedy about a much put-upon soap opera actress. "Women" will begin previews October 2 before a November 4 opening at the Belasco Theater as part of Lincoln Center’s 2010-2011 season.

A workshop production of the musical featuring Salma Hayek, Jessica Biel, and Glee’s Matthew Morrison was performed last year, but the cast for the full-scale production hasn’t yet been announced.

I WILL see this. I must.

If you are not familiar with Pedro Almodóvar’s work, I BEG of you, rent the Best Foreign Film Oscar winner "All About My Mother" or "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown". Today people! Today!

That's all.

Every Little Step

I just watched the gayest documentary while paying bills and filing papers: Every Little Step.

It's about the revival of A Chorus Line, and it pulls a storyline out of the similarities of the actors auditioning for the roles in the new version with the ones in the classic. I'm pretty sure this documentary is better than the actual play because it seems like one of those musicals trapped in a time warp that just doesn't relate to people now (i.e. Cats), but I could be wrong.

14347a.jpgTasty Oreo (aka Tyce Diorio) comes off looking like such a prima donna, showing off in auditions, and basically throwing the part away because he wants to be a star in a show where there's no real star. You kind of have to admire an ego that big.
